First loss for division three

Heathcote Bowling Club’s division three team lost its first game of the season on Saturday at the hands of Castlemaine.

HEATHCOTE Bowling Club’s division three team played Castlemaine at home on Saturday.

After a good start Heathcote struggled in the difficult windy conditions to lose its first game for the year, going down by 17 shots.

Heathcote 83 lost to Castlemaine 100

Brian Taylor 19 lost to W Jury 26; Greg Speirs 20 lost to S McCoombe 21; John McGillivray 23 lost to T Robinson 26; Bill Gardiner 21 lost to R Noble 27.

Brian Taylor’s won the first five ends, however Castlemaine fought back and scores were level by the 12th end. Brian’s team lost the last four ends and went down by seven shots.

Greg Speirs’ team made a poor start, losing the first four ends and trailed by nine shots after 15 ends.

Greg’s team rallied to win the next five ends and led by a shot on the 24th end. Sadly, luck wasn’t on their side and after losing the last end the team went down by a single shot.

John McGillivray’s team had a good start and were leading by four shots by the 9th end.

Scores were level on the 20th end but John’s team lost the last end and went down by three shots.

Bill Gardiner’s team led by five shots on the 10th end. Unfortunately, the team from Castlemaine rallied while Bill’s team struggled and after 21 ends Heathcote trailed by nine shots.

Bill’s team fought back to win the last end, however the damage had been done and the team lost by six shots.

Division six:

In the difficult and windy conditions Heathcote struggled all day against Harcourt, losing by 19 shots.

Basil Kapoulitsa 12 lost to R Douglas 35; Chris Cail 28 defeated B Buchannan 21; Denise Anderson 22 lost to J Starbuck 25; Rae Craig 21 drew with K Tribe 21.

Basil Kapoulitsa’s team won the first two ends but then struggled and trailed by 12 shots after 13 ends. Despite their best efforts, Basil’s team ultimately went down by 23 shots.

Chris Cail’s team started slowly but fought back to level the scores on the 11th end. Chris’ team continued their good form and won the last end to record a seven-shot win.

Denise Anderson’s team lost the first three ends but lifted to level the scores by the 13th end. Denise’s team then struggled. Despite winning the last three ends, Denise’s team lost by three shots.

Rae Craig’s team made an even start.

The game remained close and despite losing the last three ends Rae’s team did well to draw the game.

Midweek Pennant Results:

On Monday in very difficult windy conditions Heathcote came from behind at lunch to defeat Bendigo by 14 shots.

Heathcote 78 defeated Bendigo 64

Chris Cail 34 defeated C Young 14; Denise Anderson 22 lost to J Boyle 28; E O’Brien 22 drew with L Schiele 22.

Chris Cail’s team made a good start and led by eight shots after nine ends. Chris’ team dominated after lunch, winning 11 of the last 13 ends to win by a big 20 shots.

Denise Anderson’s team struggled early and by the 14th end trailed by 14 shots. Denise’s team then lifted, losing only four more ends to go down by only six shots.

Eileen O’Brien made an even start to be down by a shot after 13 ends. Eileen’s team then struggled but managed to score four shots on the last end to finish level.

Midweek Pennant Team:

Heathcote vs White Hills at White Hills

C Cail (s), D Cutajar, M Wright, H Baker; D Anderson (s), R Craig, S Arnold, I Hutterer; E O’Brien (s), J McDonald, D Finn, L Speirs. Team Captain: C Cail. Bus leaves at 8.30am.

Social Bowls:

On Wednesday in fine and cool conditions, 19 bowlers played three games of pairs and triples.

No team managed to win all three games, with Smokey Dawson (s) and Ilona Hutterer emerging the winners (two wins, one draw, 38 points, +8 shots).

Runners-up were Bill Gardiner (s) and Lorraine Speirs (two wins, 33 points, +15 shots), from Greg Speirs (s) and Basil Kapoulitsa (one win, two draws, 30 points, +2 shots).

The $200 jackpot was won by Brian Taylor and Neville Smith. The jackpot will be $200 today.
