HEATHCOTE’S under 12 football team will enter the Bendigo Junior Football league finals undefeated.

The Saints dominated the competition, finishing the home-and-away season with a draw and 11 wins.

The team of boys and girls will face Quarry Hill in their first game of the finals on Sunday.

Coach Stewart Ferguson said the improvement in the players has been phenomenal.

“I’m very proud of their efforts,” he said. “They’re a great bunch of kids and I’m pleased to see their skills progress over the course of the season.”

Ferguson said commitment to training from the 20 players had been excellent.

‘‘We try to make training fun for them and work on their skills,” he said

“They have responded well and we’re seeing plenty of improvement. We mainly focus on ball handling and kicking at training but we also do some fitness work.

“The team has been very competitive and has improved the last two games, which is great coming into finals.”

Ferguson said watching his players progress into higher levels of football was a huge source of pride.

“I love seeing them play at higher levels, especially in the Heathcote Football Netball Club. Its great watching a seniors game and seeing players who came through the junior team,” he said.

“The five girls are really competitive. It’s the most number of girls I’ve had in a team. Hopefully they go on to play in a high level of women’s football.”
